All admissions to Lanna International School are provisional. After a 90 day probationary period, the admission becomes final. Students for the Nursery and Reception Years are accepted at any time throughout the school year. For all other years, students from non-international schools will be accepted at the start of the year, at the start of the second quarter and at the start of the second semester. Thai students applying from a Thai school will be accepted in April.

Factors considered in making admissions to Lanna International School include age, previous schooling, English language proficiency, learning achievement, ability of the school to offer the needed educational program, availability of programs for special learning needs, and ability to pay school fees. All applicants are required to undertake a general ability assessment, an English language assessment and a Mathematics assessment as part of the admissions process.

Birth dates of students must be verified from either a passport or a birth certificate prior to official admittance to Lanna.

Parents are responsible for requesting and submitting official docu­mentation including transcripts, report cards and test scores from their child’s previous school(s). The Head of School may delay or deny admission if such documentation is not provided. It is expected that previous official documentation will be sent to the school before the student is accepted for admission and in any event within the 90 days probationary period.

If previous school records are submitted in a language other than English, they must be accompanied by an English translation and attested by the appropriate embassy, consulate or authority.

In Years 7 to 13 students may be denied admittance if their age significantly exceeds the normal average age for their year group placement.

All parents and/or companies must demonstrate the ability to pay all required fees according to the school’s payment schedule unless alternate arrangements have been made with the school.

Lanna International School reserves the right to refuse admission to any student if space is not available, or for valid educational reasons. Admission and placement of students is the responsibility of the Head of School.

Placement

Placement of students is decided by the Head of School based on a number of factors. These factors include age, previous school records, test results and the students’ abilities and needs.

Secondary school year placement will be based on both previous school experience and English language proficiency.

Special cases regarding placement will be considered on an individual basis by the Head of School.

Lanna reserves the right to reassign a student at any time if it is felt that the initial placement was inappropriate. Parents will be informed prior to the reassignment.

English Proficiency

English is the main language of instruction at Lanna International School. Although admission is open to students of any nationality, full participation in the school’s instructional programs requires proficiency in the English language. Students without English language skills are not accepted into Year 9 and above. Students in Years 7 and 8 without English language skills may be accepted into an intensive language program rather than into mainstream classes.

Expected standards of English:

- for Years 6 and 9 to be promoted to Year 7 and 10 respectively: a satisfactory reading ability ( MAC test).

- for Year 11 to be promoted into Year 12: a D or above on the IGCSE mock exam

Students with limited English proficiency may be required:

- to participate in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program (the student will be taken from first language English classes).

- to participate in the Intensive Language Program (Year 7 and 8 level). The student does not belong to a ‘Year’ since he/she is focusing on improving his/her English language skills. They will however participate in some main stream or sheltered classes to ensure social contact with their peers.

- to participate in sheltered classes (Year 7 to 11). The student is taken out of a certain subject to receive extra help. These courses are content-based; the student (Years 10 and 11) will earn credits for it.

- to do a one year Special English Program that focuses on acquiring the English proficiency necessary to succeed in other academic subjects the next Year. (After Year 8 and 11 tests, before moving into the next Year).

Special Educational Needs

Where it is felt that the student needs extra help in some areas, he/she may be required to join the SEN program as a condition of admission.
