This artwork is of a simple printing project given to Year One students. The “Intensive English” students also produced pictures the same way as the younger students, and their work is included here also. The project is easy to do and the results are very encouraging for all the students. A demonstration of “the process of working” by the teacher is quick and effective, and it is straightforward to follow for those with limited English language skills.
Sprigs of leaves are carefully selected from different grasses and bushes which will not leave them damaged. They are placed on colored background paper and sprayed with water-based inks. The leaves are then lifted off when dry. An image of the leaves remains. Then the students draw a stylized bird and butterfly on paper. When they are happy with their drawings, they are transferred by impressing them onto small sheets of polystyrene. These sheets are inked up using water-based printing ink from a roller, and prints are made. Later they are cut out and glued onto the sprayed backgrounds. The effect of the gold color seen in different light is part of the attraction of the simple compositions.
