Year 8 and 9 students responded to the painting by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. He lived 1863-1944. His painting is quite famous and has the title “The Scream”. Sometimes it is known as “The scream from the bridge”.

Students were asked to listen to what Edvard Munch wrote about this painting, and then they imagined themselves in his place walking along the fjord (the waterway) bridge as the sky turned red or changed colour and he felt as if nature was screaming outside and also in him. It is a piece of artwork about mood and the power of colour to express feelings. Students were asked to try and paint from their feelings and to involve their heart and not just their head.

Some of the photos of the Year 8 and 9 students in the pictures were adapted in Photoshop on the computers or overlaid with oil pastel.
