CMAC Chess Tournament - Saturday 1st March 2008

On Saturday 1 st of March, the cream of the Lanna Chess club met at CDSC School to compete in the CMAC Chess Tournament. Our six grandmasters were: Yu-Hsin, Ken, Best, Pop, Narit and Kwan. There were over 80 students at the tournament representing six schools. The tournament consisted of six matches, with two games in each match. The scoring was as follows: 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a lose. All of the Lanna team members played very good chess, especially considering the fact that all games were only ten minutes long so there was a lot of pressure to play quickly and also the “touch move” rule was in force so care had to be taken in moving pieces.

After four hours of intense chess playing it came to the dramatic final with our very own Yu-Hsin in the hot seat opposite his very worthy adversary from CMIS. The game moved between the players as each fought valiantly for control. In the end, the game was just won by Yu-Hsin’s opponent, taking Yu-Hsin into second place overall; a very respectable position.

The Lanna team came third overall - exceptionally pleasing considering it was a team of six playing in a tournament of 80. Well deserved congratulations to all of the team. Keep up the good chess playing. I’m looking forward to next year’s competition.
