| Lanna Students Raise Funds for a needy Rural School |
During the second week of February Lanna International School held Global Citizens Week. As a highlight of that week a special community service project was chosen for the Elementary students of Lanna to participate in. Over the course of the week parents, staff and students donated clothing, shoes and school supplies to the Huay Kong School in Om Koi district. This school has 300 students, most of whom are hilltribe. Some of the children walk up to 6 hours to school and live in a dorm during the week. Ten teachers care for and teach the 300 students.
On Friday the 15th of February Lanna’s Year 4 class hosted a Kiddie Café and car wash. The students ran everything while Ms. Jane and Ms. Erica supervised. Even the 4 and 5 year-old Foundation Years students came out and raised money by running a game booth. Many Lanna parents brought their cars and motorbikes by for washing and enjoyed some sandwiches, hot dogs and soda. The students raised 6,000 Baht and the money went towards purchasing toothbrushes, toothpaste and food for the Huay Kong students.
On Thursday the 28th, several staff members including: Ms My, Ms Erica, Ms Ann, Mr Jimmy, Ms Toey, Ms Jim, Mr Kay and Mr Mos woke up early to make the trek up the mountain to Huay Kong School. They worked together to pack all of the donations onto the back of a truck. After three hours, the group set off on the bumpy track up the mountain. Once they arrived the group settled into their one room bamboo hut and then enjoyed a dinner with the local teachers. In the morning they organized the students into 7 groups and the groups rotated through different teachers to learn new songs and games. It was a tiring but rewarding experience. After the activities it was time to give out the donations and make sure that everybody got something. They also met the local villagers and gave out baby and adult clothing. |
