Student Support

The Student Support Services department offers LANNA students a wide range of services through Counselling, Learning Support and Pastoral Care.

Counselling

The counselling service provides a confidential, safe, nurturing and personalised approach for students to explore difficulties they may encounter, complementing the pastoral support within the wider school community. Our school counsellors are always available to address the individual needs of students through prevention and intervention programmes. LANNA counsellors support, facilitate and encourage student achievement by helping them:

  • Understand and develop a positive self image
  • Implement an effective decision-making process
  • Set individual, realistic, achievable goals
  • Show respect and empathy for other cultures, traditions and individuals
  • Maintain healthy relationships with peers and adults
  • Resolve conflicts through communication
  • Increase awareness of the impact of their actions and enrich their community
  • Build resiliency in order to make transitions
  • Gain an understanding of a balanced life

Learning Support

Learning Support at LANNA is designed to support students with mild to moderate learning differences. LANNA aims to support our students by identifying their individual learning needs and provide them with effective strategies, interventions and support.

Prior to admission, LANNA’s Student Support department must determine whether we can adequately support the student’s needs. Each applicant is considered through the admissions process on a case-to-case basis. Parents whose children are identified as having learning needs are encouraged to provide the school with previous school reports, assessments reports and support plans.

Specific students’ needs are generally met with minor accommodations and/or modifications within the curriculum. Students who have been identified as having learning needs will have an Individualised Learning Plan which are usually delivered within the general classroom setting. In some cases, a Learning Support assistant may be needed to deliver these services. In other instances, more intensive learning support services may be required to address the student’s needs.

If a student is suspected of needing learning support, the school will require testing to be able to determine if the school is able to support the student’s needs. The school can assist with finding appropriate specialists to do the assessment.

Pastoral Care

Personal, social and health education (PSHE) is a subject through which students develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in a modern global society.  It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially.

Our PSHE programme of study has been specially designed with our international students’ needs as the focus. The aim of LANNA’s PSHE course is to develop integral life skills such as critical thinking, raising self-esteem, risk-management, resilience and empathy. We cover topics based on the core principles of health and wellbeing (including emotional health), relationships and living in the wider world (including independent living and economic well being).

Sessions are taught with progression in mind as students move through school and the changes in their relationships, attitudes and emotions. PSHE is delivered in a variety of forms including: specialist guest speakers, practical workshops, assemblies and circle time to engage students and enrich their learning experiences.

PSHE has a positive impact on our students at LANNA, helping to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage many of the critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face as they grow up and in adulthood.

Student Testimonials

I graduated from Lanna School in 2009, and I took with me memories that will be treasured for life.

I didn’t speak any English at all when I entered Lanna School. I had little idea of what I was interested in or what I wanted to achieve in the future. I didn’t even have a positive view of formal schooling. But I found that Lanna School was very different. Teachers here care deeply for students. They know all students by their first name. They help students see the wonders of maths, science, and arts. They make classes really engaging and meaningful. For example, my English teacher went through 33 drafts of my first essay and tirelessly explained to me the essence of essay writing, which is one of the most important skills for academic success. The comments on report cards are by far the longest and most personal I’ve ever seen. In all classes teachers encourage us to explore our interests, hopes and dreams.

The most difficult part about schooling is to make the content meaningful, and to help students grow into confident, committed, and passionate individuals. Lanna School is the place that does just that.
