The transition from Reception to Year 1 is an important moment in a child’s learning journey. In a nurturing and child-centred environment, this step is not seen as a sudden change, but as a continuation of a child’s story of growth, curiosity, and discovery.
Inspired by the principles of our Reggio Emilia approach, we recognise that children thrive when their experiences are thoughtful, meaningful, and connected. A purposeful transition allows children to move forward with confidence, knowing that their ideas, relationships, and ways of learning are valued and carried with them on their next steps.
A key part of this process is building relationships. When children have opportunities to visit their new learning spaces, meet their future teachers, and explore their new environment, they begin to feel a sense of familiarity and belonging. These experiences help children see that the new classroom is not an unfamiliar place, but an extension of their learning community here at LANNA.
Collaboration between our teams also plays an important role. When Reception and Year 1 teachers work closely together, they can share insights about each child’s interests, strengths, and developing understanding. In doing so, they ensure that learning remains responsive and meaningful, honouring the unique voice of every child.
In the early weeks of Year 1, it is important that learning continues to reflect the ways young children naturally explore the world through play, inquiry, creativity, and dialogue. Rich learning environments, thoughtful provocations, and opportunities for collaboration allow children to continue expressing their ideas in many different ways, supporting a smooth and confident transition. The environment plays a key role in supporting children and nurturing their learning and development.
Families are also valued partners in this journey. When parents and educators share observations, hopes, and reflections, children experience a sense of continuity between home and school. This kind of partnership strengthens children’s sense of security and belonging as they step into the next stage of learning. We invited our families in to join our very first transition morning, share ideas and hopes, talk about how we are supporting the children as they move into Primary and we looked at some of the exciting things Primary offers for the children.
Ultimately, a purposeful transition recognises that children do not simply move between classrooms, they carry their experiences, relationships, and curiosity with them. When we honour this process with care and intention, children enter Year 1 feeling confident, connected, and ready to continue their exploration of the world.
