Founded in 1993, Lanna International School has grown from a small community school into one of Chiang Mai’s leading international institutions. One of the most recognised and respected high school qualifications in the world, Cambridge International Advanced level (A level) is widely viewed as representing a “gold standard” and is accepted as proof of academic ability worldwide. Good grades at A level can be the key to admission to the world’s major English speaking universities.
LANNA offers by far the widest range of A level subject choices available at any school in the region, and all are courses taught by specialist teachers in very small class sizes; ensuring personalised attention and maximising students’ chances of A level success.
Each A level course occupies nine 40-minute teaching periods each week. A level courses at LANNA are offered from both Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel – both are fully accredited UK examination boards.
In addition to the core A level studies we also offer preparatory courses for SAT (USA College Board) and IELTS (UK alternative to TOEFL), and, optionally, a UK accredited Sports Leadership course and/or the opportunity to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh International Award – potentially all the way through to Gold level.
Students in Years 10 and 11 follow externally assessed courses based around a highly regarded system known as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). Students at LANNA are able to choose their IGCSE courses from a broad range of options.
Our IGCSE courses and examinations are provided by Cambridge University International Examinations (CIE). The two-year programme of IGCSE courses is designed to develop high academic standards and they are academically demanding courses, leading to formally recognised IGCSE qualifications. The programme is globally recognised to be one of the best academically rigorous programmes of study for students of this age. IGCSE class sizes at LANNA are small, with few exceeding 16 students, ensuring personalised attention for all students.
Fostering Leadership
During Year 10 many of our students choose to begin working towards the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, working from Bronze, potentially all of the way through to Gold before graduation in Y13. During Year 11, all students also undertake an accredited Leadership course, validated by Sports Leaders UK. We are proud to say that we are the only school in northern Thailand to offer this high-value accredited leadership course, and the higher-level leadership course offered during Y12 and 13. We don’t only talk about leadership, we teach it!

The Lower Secondary years form a bridge between the largely homeroom-based, integrated-day approach of the Primary School and the highly structured and examined IGCSE courses, and AS/A level courses, of the Upper Secondary School.
In the Lower Secondary School we provide a balanced and broad curriculum based on the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum of England and Wales. At this level we aim for all students to develop skills and knowledge that will form a solid foundation for further studies in the Upper Secondary School. During Years 7 to 9 all students at LANNA study: English, Mathematics, Science, Geography, History, Computing, Art, STEAM, Physical Education, Music, Drama, Personal Social & Health Education, Thai, and French or Chinese (taught by native speakers).
Students’ experiences during Years 7 to 9 enable them, towards the end of Year 9, to make informed decisions about the subjects that they will study at IGCSE level in Years 10 and 11.

LANNA operates a “Bring Your Own Laptop” (BYOL) programme, as is common in most international schools. All students in Year 7 and above are expected to bring their own laptop to school every day, fully charged and ready to use within their classes; storing it safely in their locked school locker between classes. They will not be used in every lesson but are, nevertheless, an essential item of school equipment
We are a Windows 10 based school and it is highly recommended that for ease of compatibility students bring a laptop running the Windows 10 operating system (it is possible to bring a laptop running MacOS, Linux or Chrome, but there may be software compatibility issues on occasion). What is required is a lightweight, moderately powered laptop, with good battery life. In choosing a new laptop to purchase it is strongly recommended to choose one with 4GB of Ram (memory) as an absolute minimum, and an SSD for storage. The SSD helps keep weight down and allows for super fast boot times.
In bringing a laptop to school students must also agree to some basic conditions of use, as outlined in the Secondary Student-Parent Handbook.

My many years at Lanna have been filled with academic challenges, caring teachers and administration staff, engaging extracurricular activities and meaningful friendships.
Lanna is a great school and I can not emphasise enough the impact that the IGCSE and A-level curriculums have had in preparing me to excel in life after high school. The teachers offered their fullest guidance to me every day and invested everything in me. All students benefited from the small class sizes and the attention paid to each student helped to foster a warm learning environment within each classroom. I left Lanna feeling not only academically prepared for university, but also mentally prepared to deal with many aspects of life. My mind was well equipped to deal with the challenging problem sets and quizzical essay prompts assigned to me, and my moral character was established so that I would always know to stay true to myself and to continue doing what I love doing. The past 15 years at Lanna were special and I treasure all the precious moments that I have had the privilege of sharing with my wonderful friends and teachers.
